My Rooftop Garden

Tomato Sprout

I believe I mentioned my interest in gardening, particularly squash, before in an earlier post. Well, about a month and a half ago, I came across a tweet by mcs3000 (Mary) saying that she has an abundance of extra tomatoes and herbs from working on Love Apple Farm owned by Cynthia Sandberg.

Fertilizers in PotAfter about a month of back-and-forth emailing with Mary, I finally was able to receive my very own tomatoes and a whole tray of herbs, argula, basil, and summer squash.Row of Tomatoes

I figured that since the tomatoes were already four inches tall (and growing!) I would start with those first. With a list provided by Mary from Love Apple Farm, I headed to the Sloat Garden Supply, picked up four fifteen gallon containers, four different types of extra nutrient fertilizers (bone meal, starter vitamins, blood meal, and green sand), a huge bag of soil, and another large bag of worm castings. I’m not even really sure what worm castings are, but I don’t think I care to…

Anyway, I planted the tomatoes and here are what my babies look like. I have yet to name them too. There is a brown berry, cherry, regular one, and a fourth one, which I cannot seem to remember right now.

I don’t even know if I’m allowed to plant on the roof, but if I’m not I’ve got another place to put them. Nothing’s gonna stop me from nurturing them this summer.

As always, I’ll keep you updated on the status of the plants. I can’t wait until they grow taller!
